Today, my daughter, Olive, turned 6. Yep, she's the one in the black pants with her junk hangin' out. For those of you who know Olive, this was just how she rolled--at all times--three years ago. She has never been afraid to be herself, and I so love that about my girl! That sweet one in the tutu to her right is her best pal, Maggie Rose. She was born one day before Olive. At 3, Maggie was pensive and kind, and she still is. I remember her looking at Olive with a sort of befuddled amusement as her buddy would race around the room on all fours, and there was no question that Maggie adored and accepted Olive absolutely. Their friendship was, and still is, a beautiful thing to witness.

Here are these two goofballs three years later. They are all arms and legs, minus the squishy parts, plus a little attitude. What's the same is their love for each other. I've been feeling a little sad about my girl suddenly growing up so fast, but I'm comforted by the steadfastness of the sweet friendships she has cultivated. These kids are growing up fast, but at least they're doing it together. Today I am so grateful to be Olive's mom, and equally grateful that she has a pal by her side who has loved her no matter what. My heart just might "esplode," as my youngest would say. Happy birthday, Olive and Maggie Rose!
